Who built this house?

My house is 104 years old. For the most part I love the quirky little details about my house like the crazy staircase to the upstairs and the built in book shelves. What I don't understand is that when they wired this house for electric the fact that they put in countless electrical outlets but didn't install any ceiling lights. I suppose it you wanted to use only lamps for your indoor lighting this makes sense. It just makes a room so much brighter to have an overhead light source when you need or want it and I really want them. My living room always seems so dark because no matter how many lamps I have it in is just is never bright enough. I would gladly give up one of my 8 electrical outlets for a single ceiling light.
