Canning?

Gals does canning end up being cost effective? I have really wanted to do this, but just haven't jumped on board yet. My mom used to can all the time and do a lot of freezing as well when we were kids. My grandmother used to do this all the time when we were little. I would love to learn how to do this but it intimidates me too much.
