Having worked in the health care field for over a decade as an Audiologist I KNOW that making a diagnosis is not always a clear cut process. I know that things especially with children can turn in different directions in a matter of hours. As a Mother I have the unique perspective of seeing the other side of the examining table.
My littlest was to the ER on the pediatricians advice Saturday to rule out Croup. Per the VERY nice PA both his lungs and chest X-ray were clear and we were discharged. Our hand outs were for "Upper Respiratory Syndrome" and treatment of viral illness. We were told to come back if his condition worsened. This morning about 3 am he started coughing more deeply and his fever spiked. He has had yellow copious amounts of drainage coming out of his nose. To the hospital I went as his cough was causing him to gag and not catch his breath. The ER took his temperature and then I waited 1.5 hours (with no one in the waiting room) to have a PA listen to his lungs and tell me they were clear and he had CROUP!!!!!! We were given a handout for croup and sent home with instructions to call our pediatrician for follow-up today.
SO- I just returned from the pediatrician who listened to his lungs with a shaking head and said she heard crackle in them and that they were not clear. He is now on antibiotics for bronchitis....
Bronchitis is what we called about on Saturday because his brother is on antibiotics for this and it is contagious...
I wonder....
