New York has a fabulous little thing that requires employers to provide employees with short term disability coverage. I have lived in a great many states and did not have this benefit in any of my previous jobs. This benefit while not covering my full salary has afforded me 50% of my earnings for 8 weeks post partum. The money you are paid is based on an average of your earnings for the last 8 weeks prior to your becoming disabled.
This has been a life saver that provided us the breathing room we needed to assess our option for my return to the workplace. So many things must be taken into consideration.
Yet ultimately I look in this sweet new little face and know what I have to do (at least for that moment).
